Ghosted Offbeat '+' Count Eighths In A Swing Time Groove

In this lesson you will be developing your grooves played in swing time by taking the offbeat 16th note idea applied previously in common time. See the links at the bottom of the page if you need a quick re cap on these two topics. Because of the way rhythms fall in swing time, these offbeat notes are going to be on the third note of a triplet. In a separate lesson we will look at applying these ghost notes on the second note also.

The rhythms used throughout this page should be familiar if you have learned other grooves within this timing. The point is to give you a new part construction idea that can easily be applied and will make your parts that little bit more interesting. The key thing here is to get those ghost notes quiter than the rest of the part, once you are comfortable with the timing this should be your main focus.

Listed below are several examples of this concept. For each example I have shown the groove in both swing time notation and in 'as it should be' notation. The grooves in each exercise will sound exactly the same, this is just to clarify the parts. Remember to start the parts slowly, make sure your note placement is accurate and then start working on increasing speed.
