Some ideas for very basic fill construction in the time signature of 5/4.
In this lesson you will be learning some straight forward fills in the time signature of 5/4 that involve moving straight 8th notes around the kit in simple movements. Most of these patterns will use similar movements to the lesson on similar fills Applied In 4/4 and in 3/4, so it is just the idea of extending the fill over 5 beats that needs to be worked on. In some cases the fill presented will be an exact copy of a fill from the lesson linked above, just made a bit longer, in other cases I will make the orchestration fit more with the 5/4 feel.
When learning these fills, start the pattern slowly and make sure your note and hand placement is accurate. When you are happy with the movements start to build up the tempo a little at a time. Once you can play the part at a good speed (I'd recomend 150bpm plus) try playing an AAAB style pattern all in 5/4 where the 'B' section is your new fill.
- Learn the examples shown above upto a tempo of at least 140bpm.
- Create your own variations on each example by moving around the orchestration.
- Add the fills into a structured pattern.
- Look through our list of single stroke roll orchestrations and experiment with applying these to the time signature of 5/4.
