'A A B B' Structure Using Two Bar 9/8 Grooves

In this lesson you will be expanding on phrasing ideas covered previously, this time using a simple 'A A A B' pattern but mixing it up a bit by making each block two bars long. This idea has been covered previously in Level 1 using some straight forward time signatures so at level 2 I will be making things a little more difficult. The time signature for the short pieces on this page will be 9/8.

Two Bar Groove Construction, 9/8 Grooves and 9/8 Fills all have their own lessons so the aim here is to show you how easy it is to combine all these ideas when constructing a part.

As with all phrasing lessons I'll start by showing you the structure.

The structure for this phrase construction idea.

So as discussed above, each 'building block' of the phrase now fills two bars. When it comes to the fill, this doesn't necesarrily have to fill both bars.

Listed below are several examples of ideas of parts you could play to fit this structure.

Example 1

An eight bar phrase built of an AAAB pattern using 2 bar 9/8 grooves

Example 2

An eight bar phrase built of an AAAB pattern using 2 bar 9/8 grooves

Example 3

Example 4

Example 5

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all phrases up to a tempo of at least 130bpm.
  2. Create your own versions of these patterns based on the original phrases.
