Standard Triplet 16 Beat Style Groove Orchestrated With Ride And Hi Hat

This lesson is an orchestrational development of the basic Standard Triplet 16 Beat Groove covered previously in level 3. The linked lesson exaplain the mechanics and movements of the groove so I recomend looking through this first as this lesson just discusses a simple orchestration idea.

The aim of this lesson is to give you an alternate way of playing the groove when wanting to use the ride cymbal. Look back at some example grooves from the previous lesson and try moving all the hi hats to the ride. If you have a standard 4 piece style set up this is playable but possibly a little incomfortable, if you have a standard 5 piece set up you will probably be really stuggling. What you will be trying on this page is keeping the left hand double strokes on the hi hat and moving the right hand over to the ride cymbal. This will highlight the quarter notes slightly more and because of the multiple voices used, has a slightly more complex sound.

Below I have shown the hands for the common and double time versions of this concept. I have included sticking to clarify how the hands fall.

Before progressing to the grooves below, make sure you are comfortable with the hand placement. The selection of examples that follow all use this sticking and have kicks applied at various points. As with the previous lesson, these start simple and get progressively more difficult. I have excluded any 16th notes to avoid the parts getting to complex, we'll look at that in another lesson.

  2. Experiment further with orchestration and construct your own grooves and fills using this idea.
