32nd Note Flicks In Double Time Grooves

In this lesson you will be taking a pattern similar to those covered in our previous 32nd Note Flicks groove lessons and applying the concept to double time grooves. As in the previous versions, these 32nd notes will be played using two feet, the first on the right the second on the left. Obviously to be able to play these exercises properly you will either need two bass drums or a double bass drum pedal. If your right foot is quick enough these parts can be played on a single pedal though.

In a double time groove there are four back beat snares and I have tried to put flicks before each of these to give you an idea of how the different placements would feel.

Groove 1

First of all, a placement before the back beat on the second and fourth snare. Below is a version with just a single sixteenth note kick, this will give you a feel for the timing of the full pattern.

The starting point

Then just turn the sixteenth note kick into two 32nd notes.

Adding the 32nd note flick

Listed below are several variations on a half time groove that use 32nd flicks in various ways.

Example 1

A double time groove with 32nd flicks.

Example 2

A double time groove with 32nd flicks.

Example 3

A double time groove with 32nd flicks.

Example 4

A double time groove with 32nd flicks.

Example 5

A double time groove with 32nd flicks.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all grooves up to a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  2. Add a 32nd note flick to other double time grooves.
  3. Add these patterns to a structured piece.
