Exercises In Ending A Bar With Double Kick

In this lesson I will be giving a couple of exercises that will help with parts that end with a sixteenth note double kick part that is followed by a kick at the start of the next bar. This movement can sometimes throw you off if you aren't expecting it or aren't used to it and hopefully these exercises will allow you to switch from double kick fills into groove a lot more smoothly.

The movements I will be showing will be very similar to the Single Stroke Five rudiment played on the feet as a run of sixteenths will be played then as you cross the bar you will hit the longer note of the rudiment. Practicing the version of the single stroke five that ends on the beat will be a great exercise to get you started. That would look like this:

The single stroke five ending on the beat played on the feet.

Spend some time work on this pattern then below I will show some exercises to get you used to the movement in a more practical sense.

Next let's look at an extract from a short piece. In this example you have a fill made up of four hands followed by four feet that is played twice. Following the fill you jump straight back into a groove that starts with a quarter note crash. Notice that the last four sixteenth notes of the fill and the first quarter note of the following groove make a five stroke roll.

Try playing this part and focus on getting that switch from the fill to the groove accurate. Keep in mind the five stroke roll rudiment as you play it.

Below is a similar pattern to the given above where groups of two are played between hands and feet for the fill. The idea for transitioning applies only the amount of kick played is less.

You may also see similar movements used around grooves. The groove in the pattern below ends on two sixteenth note kicks and starts on a quarter note kick.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get the exercise up to a tempo of around 110bpm.
  2. Focus on the transition between bars in each exercise.
