Constant Eighth Notes Under Rolls Around The Kit

In this lesson you will be learning a simple fill construction idea in the time signature of 4/4 where a standard roll around the kit is played on the hands and the feet play eight notes as singles underneath. This is really just applying the eighth note version of our lesson on playing the Single Stroke Roll On The Hands And Feet and orchestrating the hands. You will also be switching the hands to 16th notes whilst the feet stay as eighths for some parts.

Having the double kick part underneath is useful for time keeping and can give a fill a bit more energy. You would only really need to use two feet for these parts when the tempo gets high as eighth notes can easily be played on one foot at lower tempos.

Several examples of fill constuction using this concept are shown below. I have tried to include as many different ideas as possible and have included different lengths of fill as well as different orchestrations and variations on rhythm. Try to take the examples below as suggestions and create as many versions of each example as possible.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, aim to get all given fills up to a tempo of 180bpm.
  2. Create further variations on these fills.
  3. Apply these fills to a phrased piece.
