A B Exercises Using Crotchet And Quaver Fills

On this page you will be given various four bar patterns that follow an A B structure. In this case A will be a bar of groove and B will be a bar containing some kind of fill built from a Crotchet And Quaver Rhythms. The aim here is to develop your ability to switch from groove to fill and back again without any break in timing.

The important thing here is to repeat the four bar phrases over and over, preferably with a metronome, until you can play the part several times without any breaks in timing.

Example 1

A repeated two bar phrase using eighth and quarter note fills.

Example 2

A repeated two bar phrase using eighth and quarter note fills.

Example 3

A repeated two bar phrase using eighth and quarter note fills.

Example 4

A repeated two bar phrase using eighth and quarter note fills.

Example 5

A repeated two bar phrase using eighth and quarter note fills.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all phrases up to a tempo of at least 135bpm.
  2. Create your own versions of these patterns.
